About Us

We are a tea company based in Shizuoka, the heart of Japan's tea culture, and for 65 years we have been buying and processing tea leaves from all over Japan, mainly from Shizuoka, and selling them to tea lovers.

We at Marufuku will combine the diversity of tea with our knowledge and skills to offer you a variety of suggestions to make your "tea time" in your daily life more enjoyable and special. We want more people to know the joy of tea. That is the wish of Marufuku.

Passion for Tea

One of the most famous tea brands in Shizuoka, a leading tea producing regions, is Honyama tea. Honyama tea is grown in the area of the Abe and Warashina rivers which run through the centre of Shizuoka Prefecture. Honyama tea was loved by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) and from 1681 it was supplied to the Tokugawa Shogunate as official tea.

Tea and tea leaves

It is said that the Honyama tea spread throughout the country because of the popularity of "Abe tea", a tea grown in the Abe river basin. Abe tea is fragrant with a perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness and has been called an elegant tea since the Edo period.

The secret of the delicious taste of Abe tea lies in the soil, which is rich in minerals and has good drainage in the misty mountainous areas of the Abe river basin, where the tea tree is able to store its own nutrients and grow strongly.

At Marufuku, we use only tea leaves from the upper reaches of the Abe River, which are full of vitality, to produce our Abe tea, which we call "Honyama Abe tea". It has a smooth taste, but with a strong and appealing flavour that reminds us of the vitality of the tea leaves, which is the very essence of our passion for tea.

Our Craftsmanship

Japanese tea can be divided into various categories based on its aroma and color as well as the balance of bitter, sweet, astringent, and umami flavors. The taste and aroma are further subdivided according to the length of time the tea leaves are steamed after plucking and the depth of the roasting process. Marufuku's roasting techniques are the key to producing a uniquely rich aroma and vibrant taste from the tea leaves.

The leaves of Honyama Abe tea are rich in nutrients and flavor, creating a perfect balance of bitter and sweet flavors. Marufuku's roasting techniques bring out the best in the tea.

Our roasters, who have over 50 years of experience in identifying various types of tea leaves, have developed a roasting method for Honyama Abe tea, which involves roasting the tea leaves at high heat to bring out their deep taste, mellow aroma and clear golden color.
